The flowers are notably large. This species has not been collected since the early 20th century (exact date unknown), and may be extinct in Mauritius. The report of this species from Madagascar is based on one collection that may be labelled incorrectly.
Verdcourt (1983, 1989) reported the similar but apparently distinct species Gaertnera "sp. A" from Mauritius also, based on one collection with the inflorescence axes pubescent, the leaves larger and pubescent, and the calyx limb smaller. This has not been rediscovered and its status is difficult to evaluate with the materials available.
