This species is similar to Gaertnera monstruosa, in particular in the characteristic large stipules and leaves, but G. obesa differs in its dioecious breeding system. Van Beusekom (1967) noted that the collection data of several specimens of G. obesa mention that the plants harbored ants. One collection, Cantley's Collector 3008 (SING), is intermediate betwen G. obesa and G. grisea and presumeably a natural hybrid.

Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Borneo in Sarawak (Malaysia), in humid forests at 10-300 m.
