The separation of D. glabra and D. chontalensis remains uncertain. In the published Flora de Nicaragua, D. glabra var. chontalensis was recognized for Nicaragua and the typical variey treated as expected. Specimens cited as D. glabra sensu lato (Standley 9544, 10191, 10211, 10338, 10400, 10531) are now treated as D. agudeloi. Dalbergia agudeloi differs in being a real tree with leaflets and calyces with tangled hairs and ovaries villous on margin spreading onto flat surfaces.
