FNA24 (2007) proposed including ~A. desertorum~ within ~A. cristatum~ in North America because the species have hybridized to the point that is no longer possible to distinguish them. We agree that the species boundaries are quite blurred here. However, in their native ranges in Asia the species are distinct. Cutivars fairway, ephraim, hycrest, parkway, ruff, and ~A. cristatum x desertorum~ can all be called ~A. cristatum~ s.l.
