Perennes cespitosas; tallos 80–180 (–230) cm de largo, simples; entrenudos glabros o ligeramente pilosos cerca de los nudos. Vainas glabras; lígula 1.5–3.5 (–4.6) mm de largo; láminas 15–50 cm de largo y (2.5–) 4–8 mm de ancho, convolutas, glabras. Panícula 10–40 cm de largo, laxa, erecta; espiguillas 3.5–5 mm de largo, cafés a amarillentas; gluma inferior (3.6–) 4–5 mm de largo, 7–9-nervia, pilosa, gluma superior 3.5–5 mm de largo, 5-nervia, glabra; lema inferior 2.5–4 (–5) mm de largo; lema superior 2–4 (–4.6) mm de largo, la arista exerta 1–12 mm de largo, generalmente no geniculada, raramente 1-geniculada; anteras 1.5–3 mm de largo.

Rara, orillas de caminos, pantanos en sabanas, zona atlántica; 0–400 m; fl y fr jul, oct; Pohl 12338, Stevens 10611; México a Brasil, Paraguay, Argentina y en las Antillas.
