Description Culms 1-2 m. high; blades as much as 10 cm. wide, recurved; staminate racemes 10-15 cm. long, the central erect, the lateral drooping; pistillate inflorescence or ear and the grains or kernels variable according to the variety.
Note The original wild form is unknown but was probably a native of the Mexican or Central American highlands. Now commonly cultivated throughout warm and temperate regions.
