Plants medium-sized to rather large, sometimes slender, yellowish green or dark green, somewhat glossy, in dense or loose mats. Primary stems prostrate; secondary stems ascending, rarely dendroid, subpinnately branched. Stem leaves broadly ovate, plane or sometimes concave, acute, shortly acuminate or sometimes slenderly acuminate at apex, often clearly, sometimes barely decurrent at base; margins serrulate; costae stout at base, slender above, ending below the apex; median and upper leaf cells elongate-rhombic to shortly rhomboidal, often prorate; basal cells broader; alar cells differentiated, often inflated; branch leaves ovate-lanceolate, usually plicate, gradually or shortly acuminate, often twisted at apex, often decurrent at base. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves large, broad at base, twisted at apex. Setae elongate, often coarsely roughened or papillose; capsules ellipsoidal to shortly cylindrical, sometimes curved, asymmetric, smooth; stomata present in necks; opercula conic at base, obliquely or shortly rostrate; annuli developed, narrow; peristome double; exostome teeth brown to reddish brown, papillose above, cross-striolate below; endostome segments keeled, perforate, papillose; basal membrane high; cilia present, nodulose. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth or rarely sparsely hairy. Spores spherical, smooth or papillose.
