Plants slender, green or dark green, not glossy. Primary stems short, creeping, usually with rhizoids; secondary stems erect, spreading, simple or rarely branched; branch apex tail-like; gemmae present, consisting of uniseriate cells in leaf axils. Lateral leaves ovate or ovate-lanceolate, sharply serrate above; costa short, simple, sometimes forked or absent; laminal cells oval or elongate-hexagonal, smooth, rather thick-walled, often pitted; leaf margins bordered by narrow elongate cells; amphigastria appressed, broadly ovate or ovate-round, entire or serrate at the apex; costa short or absent. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves sheathing at base. Setae elongate; capsules ovoid; exostome teeth lanceolate, with indistinct zigzag furrows, keeled, hyaline, densely finely papillose outside, shortly striate inside; endostome segments narrowly lanceolate; basal membrane high; cilia absent. Calyptrae long- rostrate, lobed along the margin, slightly coarse, sometimes with hairs.
