Donnellia is a neotropical genus of six species. Buck (1982) has discussed the relationship of Donnellia and Meiothecium; the former exhibits an exostome that is closely spaced, smooth and trabeculate with a fragile endostome, the latter exhibits an exostome that is widely spaced and papillose, and lacks an endostome.

 

Donnellia es un género neotropical de seis especies. Buck (1982) discutió las relaciones entre Donnellia y Meiothecium; el primer género exhibe un exostoma poco espaciado, liso y trabeculado con un endostoma frágil, el último exhibe un exostoma ampliamente espaciado y papiloso, y sin endostoma.

Plants small, forming tufts or mats, glossy green to yellowish. Stems creeping to subascending distally, radiculose below; central strand absent; rhizoids clustered. Leaves often homomallous, erect-spreading, ovate- to oblong-lanceolate, 0.5-2 mm long, to 0.6 mm wide, concave, weakly biplicate at base, apex gradually acuminate, bluntly rounded; margins plane above, at base reflexed on one or both sides, entire; costa absent; median cells rhomboidal-rounded, smooth, thick-walled; basal cells weakly porose; insertion cells golden; alar cells subquadrate to short oblong, little inflated, in 1-2 rows, golden-yellow. Autoicous. Perigonia bud-like; leaves ovate, acute. Perichaetial leaves similar. Setae rather short to elongate, ca. 2.2-8 mm long, erect to somewhat flexuose, smooth. Capsules, erect to suberect, urn obloid to ovoid-cylindrical, 1-2 mm long, constricted below mouth when dry and deoperculate; exothecial cells collenchymatous; stomata several at urn base, superficial; opercula conic long rostrate; peristome double, exostome teeth 16, hyaline, blunt, trabeculate, plate walls prominent on both surfaces; endostome basal membrane short, segments very slender, weakly keeled, lightly papillose, fragile and readily deciduous. Calyptrae cucullate, naked and smooth. Spores spherical to ovoid, lightly papillose.

Autoicas. Perigonio en forma de brote; hojas ovadas, agudas. Hojas periqueciales similares. Setas muy cortas a alargadas, ca. 2.2-8 mm de largo, erectas a algo flexuosas, lisas. Cápsulas, erectas a suberectas, urna obloide a ovoide-cilíndrica, 1-2 mm de largo, constricta debajo de la boca en seco y sin opérculo; células exoteciales colenquimatosas; varios estomas en la base de la urna, superficiales; opérculo cónico largo rostrado; peristoma doble, exostoma con 16 dientes, hialinos, obtusos, trabeculados, paredes de la placa prominente en ambas superficies; membrana basal del endostoma corta, segmentos muy delgados, débilmente carinados, finamente papilosos, frágiles y fácilmente deciduos. Caliptra cuculada, desnuda y lisa. Esporas esféricas a ovoides, finamente papilosas.
