Plants somewhat robust, grayish green or yellowish green, in loose patches. Stems creeping, irregularly branched, somewhat julaceous; stem in cross section, with 3–4 rows of small, thick-walled cortical cells, central strand differentiated. Stem leaves and branch leaves similar, dense, erect-spreading when moist, appressed when dry, broadly ovate or oblong-ovate, concave, shortly or gradually acuminate, with erect or secund leaf apices; margins plane, usually recurved near leaf base, serrulate above; costae double, sometimes indistinct or absent; median and upper leaf cells narrowly rhomboidal; alar cells numerous, subquadrate or oblate. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves lanceolate, long-acuminate, serrulate above, costae double or indistinct. Setae elongate, usually twisted toward right when dry; capsules suberect or slightly inclined, oblong-ellipsoidal; opercula conic, shortly rostrate; annuli well developed, in 2 rows; perfect double peristome; exostome teeth broad-lanceolate, pale yellowish, cross-striolate and papillose on the dorsal surfaces, hyaline at apex, trabeculate on the ventral surfaces; endostome segments keeled, perforate, hyaline, papillose; cilia single, nodulose, or sometimes not well developed. Spores minutely papillose.
