Plants small, gregarious or loosely tufted, dull, yellow-green or brownish. Stems simple, radiculose only at base. Leaves small below, larger and more crowded in a comal tuft above, loosely appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, lanceolate, slenderly acuminate; costa subpercurrent to slightly excurrent (in uppermost leaves); upper cells elongate, smooth, thin- or thick-walled; basal cells broader and laxer. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves similar to the upper leaves. Setae very short, erect; capsules immersed, oblong- to ovoid-cylindric, truncate at base, dark red-brown and shiny; annulus large, consisting of 2 layers of vesiculose cells, revoluble in fragments; operculum conic, apiculate; exothecial cells large, lax and thin-walled, irregularly oblong-hexagonal, very dark, smaller toward the mouth; peristome inserted shortly below the mouth, short, irregularly forked, golden-brown, densely papillose. Spores spherical. Calyptrae covering only the operculum, conic-mitrate, coarsely mammillose throughout or rarely nearly smooth.
