Heterophyllium contains 10 or more species distributed in the temperate and montane tropical regions; a single species in the Neotropics. The differentiated stem and branch leaves, coarsely serrated distal leaf margins, subquadrate to short oblong alar cells, short rostrate to conic-apiculate opercula, and well developed peristome characterize the genus.
 
Heterophyllium contiene 10 o más especies distribuidas en regiones templadas y tropicales montanas; existe una sola especie en el Neotrópico. El género se caracteriza por las hojas del tallo y ramas diferenciadas, márgenes distales de las hojas ásperamente aserradas, células alares cuadradas a corto-oblongas, opérculo corto-rostrado a cónico-apiculado, y peristoma bien desarrollado.
