general taxon notes:
The genus has about ten species in the world. Although three species were reported in the literature for China, only H. acutifolia is accepted here. Hookeria lucens (Hedw.) Sm., which differs from H. acutifolia in having a round-obtuse leaf apex, is a western North American and European species and is probably not present in China. The Chinese records of H. lucens are based on collections named H. nipponensis (Besch.) Broth., which has a somewhat broadly acute leaf apex. This latter taxon is treated as a synonym of H. acutifolia (Iwatsuki 1991).
