This Amazonian lowland monospecific genus of inundated sites can be recognized by the combination of pendent habit, slender leafy stems becoming noticeably crowded toward the tips, oblong-obovate to short oblong leaves, few alar cells, immersed capsules, and single peristome. This genus was previously placed in the Hydropogonaceae.


Hydropogon es un género amazónico monoespecífico de sitios inundados, está representado por Hydropogon fontinaloides (Hook.) Brid. El género puede ser reconocido por la combinación de su hábito pendiente, tallos foliosos delgados tornándose claramente agregados hacia los extremos, hojas oblongo-obovadas a corto oblongas, pocas células alares, cápsulas inmersas y peristoma simple.
