general taxon notes:
The genus contains some 20 species with a pantropical distribution. Two species are recorded for the Neotropics (Buck, 1982). Although this genus is relatively widespread in tropical South America it appears that of the species are rare or infrequent in occurrance. Meiothecium is characterized by smooth to papillose, narrow, widely spaced exostome teeth with endostome lacking.
