Discussion:

The circumscription of Mnium follows Koponen (1968) which restricts the genus to those species (excepting M. stellare) having multistratose, doubly serrate leaf margins.

Mnium Hedw., Sp. Musc. Frond. 188. 1801. 

Medium-sized plants in dark-green or yellowish green tufts. Stems erect, simple, Mnium-type; reddish‑brown macronemata at base of stems, micronemata absent. Leaves spirally arranged, erect‑spreading to spreading, oblong‑elliptic, decurrent; margins multistratose, doubly toothed, bordered by linear cells; costae single, strong, subpercurrent to percurrent, usually toothed at back, with two stereid bands; upper cells hexagonal to isodiametric, firm‑walled, with or without thickened corners, smooth. Dioicous, paroicous, or synoicous. Setae elongate. Capsules exserted, horizontal to pendulous, oblong to cylindrical, smooth; stomata immersed in neck; opercula rostrate to mammillate; exostome of 16 narrowly triangular teeth, endostome basal membrane well-developed, segments perforate, cilia 2–4. Calyptrae cucullate, naked.
