Notes:
A genus of about nine species primarily of the Northern Hemisphere; three species in the Neotropics, all recorded for the tropical Andes. Orthodicranum is characterized by the generally smaller plants than Dicranum with leaves generally 3 mm or less long, presence of flagellate branches (rarely lacking), and erect capsules. The following species (O. flagellare and O. montanum) are often placed in the genus Dicranum which is possibly justified if members of Orthodicranum are merely derived from within Dicranum.
