Orthostichidium contains about eight species distributed in the tropics of America and Africa; a single species, Orthostichidium quadrangulare (Schwägr.) B.H. Allen & Magill., in the Neotropics. This neotropical species was previously known as Orthostichidium guyanense (Mont.) Broth., and more recently placed in Hildebrandtiella guyanensis (Mont.) W.R. Buck. Orthostichidium is distinguished by the rather robust, green to golden-brown, irregularly branched secondary stems, 5-spirally ranked leaves, absence of a costa, and few alar cells.
