A neotropical monotypic genus as treated here. Potamium is characterized by the habitat and the spreading, elongate, dark green plants, ligulate leaves, distally serrate margins, smooth laminal cells, and furrowed exostome teeth. Buck (1990, see general references) states that for this taxon the capsules are small and pendent, urn globular and the exostome teeth distinctly furrowed along the median line.
 
Un género monoespecífico neotropical. Potamium se caracteriza por el hábito de las plantas patentes, alargadas, verde oscuras, hojas liguladas, márgenes distalmente serrados, células de la lámina lisas y dientes del exostoma acanalados. Buck (1990, ver referencias generales) menciona que este taxón presenta cápsulas pequeñas y pendientes, urna globular y dientes del exostoma conspicuamente acanalados a lo largo de la línea media.
