Rhamphidium is a small pantropical genus of some 15 species; about five species recorded for the Neotropics. Previously placed in the Pottiaceae, Rhamphidium shares various gametophytic and particularly sporophytic features that presently align this genus to the Ditrichaceae (cf. Zander, 1993: 275. See reference under Pottiaceae.). Rhamphidium dicranoides may be confused with some members of Dicranella but differs by the broad lamina, bulging cells on upper surface, and the coarsely spirally-ridged peristome teeth. All of the taxa listed below under “status unknown” may prove to be synonyms of R. dicranoides.
