Sanionia contains three species with a mostly North Hemisphere distribution (Hedenäs, 1989); only the species given below is known in the Neotropics. Previous and some recent authors places this genus within Drepanocladus for which is shared the falcate, long lanceolate leaves, gradually long acuminate apex, slender single costa, linear median and upper laminal cells and well differentiated alar cells, but Sanionia differs from that genus by the rather numerous pseudoparaphyllia, and strongly plicate leaves.
