Plants light-green to olive-green, darkening in older parts, dull (in ours) or shiny (Asia, Australasia, and Oceania). Stems unbranched or branched. Leaves ovate to oblong-ovate, acute to mucronate; margins elimbate (in ours) or limbate (Asian, Australasian, and Oceanic species), plane or reflexed; costae percurrent to short-excurrent; laminal cells rounded-quadrate, smooth (Asian, Australasia, and Oceanic species) or unipapillose (in ours).
