general taxon notes:
Brotherus (1907) treated Giraldiella under Entodontaceae, but later (Brotherus 1925) placed it in the Hypnaceae. P.-C Chen et al. (1978) recognized it as a genus of the subfamily Macrohymenioideae under Sematophyllaceae. Recently, Walther (1983), Vitt (1984), and Buck and Goffinet (2000) all placed Giraldiella in the Hypnaceae. Giraldiella levieri C. Müll. is distinguished from species of Pylaisia and other related taxa by the hyaline alar cells and by having the endostome segments much longer than the exostome teeth.
