Hamatocaulis contains two species, primarily found in the temperate region, only H. vernicosus is recorded from the Neotropics. Rather similar to Sanionia but in that genus the alar cells enlarged and hyaline, and stems have a hyalodermis.
Hamatocaulis contiene dos especies, encontradas principalmente en la región templada, sólo H. vernicosus está reportada para el Neotrópico. Algo similar a Sanionia en este género las células alares son alargadas e hialinas, y los tallos tienen una hialodermis.
