Gradsteinia, only known from the type locality, is not likely to be confused with any other genus, the combination of distinctive features include - the frimbrate, deeply concave oblong to oblong-ovate leaves with a diffuse multiple costae (3-5 segments). Ochyra described this as one of several monotypic aquatic taxa. He has suggested placement of this taxon in the family Donrichardaiaceae, a segregate of little proven meaning. Recent molecular studies suggest that Gradsteinia is within the generic limits of taxa that are generally associated with the Amblystegiaceae.
 
Gradsteinia, sólo conocida de la localidad tipo, no es probable que se confunda con algún otro género, la combinación de rasgos distintivos incluye - las hojas fimbriadas, profundamente cóncavas, oblongas a oblongo-ovadas con una costa múltiple difusa (3-5 segmentos). Ochyra describió éste como uno de varios taxa acuáticos monotípicos. Él ha sugerido la ubicación de este taxon en la familia Donrichardiaceae, un segregado de significación poco comprobada. Recientes estudios moleculares sugieren que Gradsteinia está dentro de los límites genéricos de taxa asociados generalmente con las Amblystegiaceae.
