Fissidens bryoides is a highly variable taxon (Pursell 2007). Features of this species include the lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate or -lingulate leaves, acute to short acuminate or obtuse-apciulate apex, entire or occaionally serrulate distal margins, bordered throughout, percurrent to short excurrent costa, vaginant laminae 1/2-2/3 the leaf length, firm-walled, smooth to sligthly bulging laminal cells. The collection cited below was originally determined by R.A. Pursell as var. pusillus (Wilson) Pursell, however Pursell (2007) considered the recognition of varieties of questionable value.
