Desmatodon gemmascens var. hopeiensis P.-C. Chen, Hedwigia 80: 229, f. 72, 6–9. 1941, syn. nov. Type. China: Hebei (Hopei), Dong-ling (Tung-ling), L.-C. Yu 6 (holotype PE).
Plants small to medium-sized, rather thick, 7–15(–20) mm high, yellowish brown, in loose tufts. Stems erect, simple, rarely branched, densely radiculose at the base. Leaves oblong-obovate to oblong-elliptic, narrowed at the base, abruptly acute to apiculate at the apex; margins distinctly bordered by several rows of cells, entire in the lower half, serrulate above, rarely revolute; costa percurrent; upper cells rounded hexagonal, moderately thick-walled to thick-walled, with numerous irregular papillae. Gemmae abundant, occurring in leaf axils or on the surfaces of leaves, sometimes gemmae developed into young plants on the leaves or stems. Sporophytes not seen.
