general taxon notes:
Hypnum cupressiforme is characterized by the few, short plant branches, ovate-lanceolate leaves, short to rather long acuminate apex, and numerous, moderately thick-walled, quadrate alar cells. A highly variable species, widespread in the cool temperate regions of both hemispheres and extending into the tropics in montane regions (cf. Ando, 1989). Two varieties, var. cupressiforme and var. lacunosum, are recognized for Bolivia (and the tropical Andes); at the extremes both are quite distinct, but several collections appear to be intermediate. The two varieties may be differentiated in the key given for var. cupressiforme and var. lacunosum.
1. Leaves usually moderately to strongly falcate, acumen long and gradually acuminate … var. cupressiforme
1. Leaves straight to weakly falcate, acumen ± abruptly short acuminate … var. lacunosum
1. Hojas rectas a débilmente falcadas, acumen ± abruptamente corto acuminado … var. lacunosum
