Ecology: Páramo; boggy sites, on wet soil or humus. Elevation: (1800)3200-3850 m (Venezuela: 1800 m, Colombia: 3200-3840 m, Ecuador: 3850 m). Distribution: Widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, scattered locations in the Southern Hemisphere at mostly high elevations, in the Neotropics from Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, southeast Brazil and Tierra del Fuego.
Ecología: Páramo; en sitios pantanosos, sobre suelo húmedo o humus. Elevación: 1800-3850 m (Venezuela: 1800 m, Colombia: 3200-3840 m, Ecuador: 3850 m). Distribución: Ampliamente distribuida en el Hemisferio Norte, en localidades dispersas en el hemisferio Sur, mayormente en altas elevaciones, en el Neotrópico en Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, sudeste de Brasil y Tierra del Fuego.

Plants medium sized, forming dense, compact tufts, pale green to yellowish-green. Stems erect, to 3 cm or more tall, few branched; central strand well developed; densely tomentose. Leaves crowded, erect to erect-spreading, oblong- to obovate-lanceolate, 4-5.5 mm long, 1.2-1.8 mm wide, deeply concave, apex narrowly acuminate, ending in a long hyaline tip; margins incurved, entire; costae single, percurrent; laminal cells smooth, median cells oblong, rectangular- to hexagonal-rounded, 38-65 µm long, 18-20 µm wide; basal cells long rectangular, lax. Autoicous. Perichaetia terminal; leaves somewhat larger than stem leaves. Setae elongate, smooth. Capsules erect, urn short cylindrical, hypophysis elliptical, ca. 2 times longer than urn; opercula conic; peristome single, teeth 8, reflexed when dry, outer surface papillose, inner surface smooth. Calyptrae mitrate, smooth and naked. Spores smooth.
Plantas de tamaño mediano, formando manojos compactos densos, verde pálidas a verde-amarillentas. Tallos erectos, hasta 3 cm o más altos, poco ramificados; cordón central bien desarrollado; densamente tomentosos. Hojas apretadas, erectas a erecto-extendidas, oblongo- a obovado-lanceoladas, 4-5.5 mm de largo, 1.2-1.8 mm de ancho, profundamente cóncavas, ápice angostamente acuminado, terminando en un extremo largo hialino; márgenes incurvos, enteros; costa simple percurrente; células de la lámina lisas, células mediales oblongas, rectangular- a hexagonal-redondeadas, 38-65 µm de largo, 18-20 µm de ancho; células basales largo rectangulares, laxas. Autoicas. Periquecios terminales; hojas algo más largas que las del tallo. Setas elongadas, lisas. Cápsulas erectas, urna corto-cilíndrica, hipófisis elíptica, aprox. 2 veces más larga que la urna; opérculo cónico; peristoma simple, dientes 8, reflexos en seco, superficie externa papilosa, superficie interna lisa. Caliptra mitrada, lisa y desnuda. Esporas lisas.
