Ecology and distribution. High open montane and puna, on soil and rocks. At 3500-4000 m elevation. In South America known from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay; rather widespread in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Tortula minima Herzog is a synonym.
