Notes:

Ecology: Mid to mostly high montane, páramo and puna; on wet soil and rocks. Elevation: 2100-4100 m (Colombia: 2100-4100 m, Bolivia: 3570-4800 m). Distribution: Widespread, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere.
 
The distinguishing feature of this species are the position of the project papillae, low papillae projecting on the upper end of cells on the distal lamina, and on the lower end of the cells at the base. Previous reports of Philonotis thwaitesii Mitt. from Bolivia are P. fontana (see reference by Koponen).
 
Las características que distinguen a esta especie son la posición de las papilas que se proyectan, las papilas bajas proyectándose en los extremos superiores de las células en la porción distal de la lámina y en los extremos inferiores de las células basales. Reportes anteriores de Philonotis thwaitesii Mitt. provenientes de Bolivia se refieren a P. fontana (ver referencias de Koponen).
