Ecology and distribution. Open forested premontane; on vertical soil covered rocks. Rare, at elevations from 600-700 m (Colombia: 700 m, Peru: 600 m).
Barbula occidentalis is similar to B. indica (Hook.) Spreng., but differs by the large parenchymatous cells on the dorsal part of the costa (Zander, pers. comm.).
