Ecology: Open montane to páramo and humid puna; on soil. Elevation: 2800-4270 m (Venezuela: ? m, Colombia: 2800-4100 m, Bolivia: 4270 m). Distribution: Costa Rica, Venezuela to Ecuador.
Bartramia strumosa is distinguished by the small plant stature to 1.5 cm, erect to spreading leaves ca. 2-3.5 mm, firm, thick-walled shoulder cells, thin-walled, entire not porose leaf base cells, perichaetial to stem leaves equal in length, erect setae to 20 mm, and ovoid to globose, gymnostomous capsules (peristome absent).
Bartramia strumosa se distingue por las plantas pequeñas hasta 1.5 cm, hojas erectas a patentes ca. 2-3.5 mm, células del hombro con paredes gruesas y firmes, células de la base con paredes delgadas, enteras no porosas, hojas periquecial u del tallo iguales en longitud, setas erectas hasta 20 mm, y cápsulas ovoides a globosas, gimnostomas (sin peristoma).
