Ecology. Yungas and Tucumano-Bolivian montane forest; on living and dead tree branches. Elevation. 1900-2600 m. Distribution. Bolivia: Santa Cruz. World range: United States. (Florida), Central America (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama), West Indies, tropical Andes, sureste Brazil.
Ecología. Bosque montano de Yungas y Tucumano-Boliviano; sobre ramas de árboles vivas y muertas. Altitud. 1900-2600 m. Distribución. Bolivia: Santa Cruz. Distribución mundial: Estados Unidos (Florida), Centro América (Costa Rica, Nicaragua y Panamá), Caribe, Andes tropicales y sureste de Brasil.
Brachymenium speciosum is one of the largest species in the tropical Andes. Stems to 30 mm long, typically branched by subfloral innovations, leaves oblong-lanceolate to oblong, 3-4.5 mm long, apex long acuminate, margins plane above, usually reflexed below, serrulate above, costa length variable, even on the same plant, ending well below the apex to long excurrent and toothed, bordered with 2-3 elongate and thick-walled cells, laminal cells thin-walled, basal cells rectangular, seta ca. 30, but variable also, 20-35 mm long, urn notably elongate, obloid-cylindrical, and operculum distinctly long-beaked. The species was assigned by Ochi (1980) to section Peromnium.
Brachymenium speciosum es una de las mayores especies en los Andes tropicales. Tallos de hasta 30 mm de largo, típicamente ramificados por brotes subflorales de innovación, hojas oblongo-lanceoladas a oblongas, 3-4.5 mm de largo, ápices largo-acuminados, márgenes planos en la porción distal, generalmente reflexos hacia la base, serrulados distalmente, longitud de la costa variable, incluso en la misma planta, terminando bien abajo del ápice hasta largo-excurrente y dentada, bordeada por 2-3 células alargadas y con paredes gruesas, células de la lámina con paredes delgadas, células basales rectangulares, seta ca. 30 mm, pero también variable, 20-35 mm de largo, urna particularmente alargada, obloide-cilíndrica y opérculo conspicuamente largo-rostrado. La especie fue transferida por Ochi (1980) a la sección Peromnium.
