Ecology. Open Yungas montane, probably extending into the humid puna; on soil and rocks. Elevation. 2700-3500 m. Distribution. Bolivia: Cochabamba, La Paz. World range: Mexico, Central America to Chile, widespread in the temperate regions of the North Hemisphere.
 
Ecología. Montano abierto de Yungas, probablemente extendiéndose en la puna húmeda; sobre suelo y rocas. Altitud. 2700-3500 m. Distribución. Bolivia: Cochabamba y La Paz. Distribución mundial: México, Centro América hasta Chile, amplia distribución en las regiones templadas del hemisferio norte.
 
Brachythecium rutabulum is characterized by the ovate, weakly plicate leaves, short, apiculate acute apex that is often half-twisted, decurrent base, serrate upper margins, linear medium and upper laminal cells, apical cell of apex of similar size as those below, autoicous sexual condition, and seta densely papillose throughout. Synonyms include Brachythecium scabruoes Müll. Hal., Rhynchostegium hirtipes Schimp. ex Müll. Hal.; nom. nud. include Brachythecium rivulariforme Schimp. ex Müll. Hal. and B. riparium Schimp. ex Müll. Hal.
 
Brachythecium rutabulum se caracteriza por las hojas ovadas, débilmente plegadas, ápices cortos, apiculados agudos y a menudo medio-torcidos, bases decurrentes, márgenes serrados en la porción superior, células mediales y superiores de la lámina lineares, célula apical de los extremos de tamaño similar a aquellas que están debajo, condición sexual autoica y setas densamente papilosas en toda la superficie. Los sinónimos incluyen a Brachythecium scabruoes Müll. Hal., Rhynchostegium hirtipes Schimp. Ex Müll. Hal.; nom. nud. incluyen a  Brachythecium rivulariforme Schimp. ex Müll.
