Ecology. Yungas and Tucuman-Bolivian montane forest; on soil, humus, base of trees. Elevation. 1074-2440 m. Distribution. Bolivia: Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Tarija. World range: widespread (apparently absent from Asia).
 
Ecología. Bosque montano de Yungas y Tucumano-Boliviano; sobre suelo, humus y bases de árboles. Altitud. 1074-2440 m. Distribución. Bolivia: Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz y Tarija. Distribución mundial: amplia distribución (aparentemente ausente en Asia).
Bryum canariense appears to be characterized by large plants to 3 cm, distally crowded oblong leaves to 4 mm, acute apex, short excurrent costa, recurved to ca. 3/4 leaf length and distally weakly serrulate or serrate margins, absent or weakly bordered with 1(2) rows linear cells. Most of our recent collections are tentatively named. Bryum coloratum Müll. Hal. is a synonym; collected by Lorentz from “Su. Luis et Amareta,” (Department of Tarija; actrual locality names are San Luis = Entre Ríos, and Amereta).
 
Bryum canariense parece caracterizarse por las plantas grandes hasta 3 cm, hojas distalmente agregadas, oblongas hasta 4 mm, ápices agudos, costa corto excurrente, recurvada hasta ca. ¾ de la longitud de la hoja y márgenes débilmente serrulados o serrados en la porción distal, borde débil o ausente con 1(2) filas de células lineares. La mayoría de nuestras colecciones recientes están nombradas tentativamente. Bryum coloratum Müll. Hal. Es un sinónimo; colectado por Lorentz en "Su. Luis et Amareta," (departamento de Tarija; los nombres actuales de las localidades son San Luis = Entre Ríos y Amereta).
