Plants robust, light green, brownish green when old, in loose tufts. Stems single or with innovations, 5 cm high or more, ca. 1.8 cm in diameter with leaves; rhizoids pale brown, on base of stems. Basal leaves scale-like; upper leaves rigid, appressed or crisped when dry, erect-patent when moist, 0.5–1 cm × 1.5–2.0 mm, broadly lanceolate from an oval or round base, acute at apex; leaf margins sharply serrate, serration vanishing near sheathing base; costa reddish brown, grossly dentate at the back; lamellae densely arranged on ventral surface, 2–5 cells high, apical cells of lamellae large, double bottle-like, thin-walled; basal leaf cells rectangular, ca. 90 µm × 18 µm, narrower toward sheathing base; upper leaf cells rounded-quadrate to slightly rectangular, ca. 15 µm in diameter. Dioicous. Setae up to 3 cm long, sometimes 2–3 in a perichaetium; capsules erect or inclined, reddish brown, up to 6 mm long, 2.5 mm in diameter; exothecial cells thick-walled; opercula rounded-conical with a short beak; peristome teeth 32, with brownish stripes. Calyptrae covering the whole capsules. Spores spherical, 8–15 µm in diameter.
