Dicranella heteromalla is characterized by the erect to falcate-secund leaves to 3 mm, subulate from a lanceolate base, distally serrulate margins, excurrent costa (ca. 1/3 the width at leaf base), yellow seta, asymmetric, typically furrowed and inclined capsules. Dicranella crassinervis (Hampe) A. Jaeger (Aongstroemia crassinervis Hampe) is a synonym.
