Plants medium-sized, dark green or yellowish green, not or somewhat glossy, in dense or loose mats. Stems complanate, irregularly branched, with ascending branches, rarely prostrate, 1.5–3.0 cm long, 5 mm wide with leaves; central strand developed. All leaves strongly contorted when young, sometimes plane, broadly ovate-lanceolate, 2.4–3.5 mm × 1.1–1.6 mm, mostly symmetric, more or less concave, abruptly acute; margins plane, nearly entire or minutely serrulate near the apex; costae double, often reaching the mid-leaf or slightly above; median leaf cells elongate-rhombic to linear-rhomboidal, 60–100 µm × 15–25 µm, thin-walled; apical cells shorter, broader; basal cells significantly broader; alar regions narrowly decurrent, consisting of rectangular or linear cells. Brood bodies often present at leaf apex. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves shortly ovate-lanceolate, ca. 1.5 mm long, sheathing at base. Setae 15–40 mm long, reddish below, brownish above; capsules cylindrical, inclined or horizontal, often curved, smooth when dry, 2.0–2.5 mm long; opercula conic-rostrate with a short beak; annuli well developed; cilia 2–3, nodulose. Spores 10–15 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
