Ecology. High open Yungas montane to humid puna; wet habitats, on soil and over rocks, mostly found along streams. Elevation. 3080-4800 m.. Distribution. Bolivia: Cochabamba, La Paz. World range: widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, in the Neotropics mostly at high elevations; New Zealand. Some authors place this species in the genus Mniobryum.

Pohlia wahlenbergii is characterized by the reddish or pink coloration and soft texture of the plants, distant to somewhat crowded, lax, broadly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate leaves to 2.5 mm, acute apex, generally decurrent base, crenulate to blundly serrulate distal margins, lax, large rhomboidal laminal cells 13 µm or more wide. Temperate region plants are usually pale green or whitish green, in Bolivia the plants are usually reddish or pink in color. Mniobryum bolivianum Broth. is a synonym; the syntypes were both collected by Herzog from Chocayatal and Llavetal (Department of Cochabamba).
