Polytrichum commune, only known from a single collection, is distinguished by the U-shaped or emarginate terminal lamellae viewed in leaf cross-section.
 
Polytrichum commune, es conocida sólo por una colección, se distingue por las células terminales de las lamelas en forma de U o emarginadas vistas en hoja corte transversal.
