Ecology: Lowland to montane forest; on soil, humus, leaf litter, logs, base of trees. Elevation: 35-2600 m (Venezuela: 35-1500 m, Colombia: 200-2600 m, Ecuador: 200-1800 m, Peru: 100-1300 m, Bolivia: 190-2340 m). Distribution: Widespread in the Neotropics, eastern North America. Isopterygium chrismarii (Müll. Hal.) Mitt. (type not located, fide Ireland) reported from Meta and Valle (at elevations from 5-500 m) probably represents I. tenerum.
Isopterygium tenerum is characterized by the ovate-acuminate leaves (mostly less than 1.2 mm long), few quadrate to short rectangular alar cells, 2-4 along margin, and strongly constricted below the capsule mouth. Isopterygium tenerum is likely to be confused with I. byssobolax, the former is distinguished by the 1-3(4) quadrate cells along the leaf base margin, the latter by the more numerous (4-10) quadrate cells. Synonyms include Isopterygium cylindraceum (Müll. Hal.) Paris, I. eutrypherum (Müll. Hal.) Paris, I. hospitans (Hampe) A. Jaeger, I. peruvianum Broth., I. pseudo-tenerum (Broth. & Kindb.) Broth., and Leskea pygmaea Taylor.
