general taxon notes:
Isopterygium tenerum is a variable species, especially in the sizes of plants, but it is generally characterized by the erect-spreading, distinctly complanate leaves that are often brownish or dark-reddish, and by the somewhat differentiated alar cells.

Plants slender, pale green or yellowish green, sometimes yellowish brown. Stems ca. 5 cm long, subpinnately branched, radiculose; pseudoparaphyllia filamentous, usually uniseriate, rarely biseriate. Leaves erect-spreading, often secund toward one side, not plicate, symmetric or asymmetric, 0.7–1.8 mm × 0.2–0.6 mm, not decurrent or 1–2 cells decurrent, elliptic- or triangular-lanceolate, acuminate at apex; margins entire or serrulate above; costae short, double or forked; leaf cells smooth, linear, 50–150 µm × 5–8 µm; alar cells differentiated, shortly rectangular or quadrate. Brood bodies present, usually in clusters in leaf axils, 0.5 mm × 0.16–0.20 mm, filiform, papillose, simple or branched. Autoicous. Perigonia and perichaetia numerous on base of stems; perigonial leaves small, triangular- or ovate-lanceolate. Perichaetial leaves triangular-lanceolate, acuminate or filiform at apex. Setae 8–20 mm long, brownish or reddish brown; capsules horizontal or inclined, arcuate, asymmetric, oblong-ovoid, 1.0–1.3 mm long, constricted below the mouth when dry; opercula conic, slenderly and obliquely rostrate; annuli not differentiated; peristome teeth orange-brown, segments brownish, with 1–2 cilia. Spores 10–15 µm in diameter, papillose.
