Ecology: High open montane (associated with Quercus forest) to páramo; typically wet habitats, marshes or along streams, and margins of ponds and lakes, on soil, rocks, leaf litter. Elevation: 2880-4000 m. Distribution: Widespread in the north temperate regions, and scattered localities in the Southern Hemisphere; in the Neotropics recorded for Central America, West Inides, southeast Brazil, and from the tropical Andes only known from Colombia.
Ecología: Montane alto abierto o páramo; asociado con sitios mojados, sobre suelo, rocas, hojarasca, ciénagas o a lo largo de corrientes, y en márgenes de estanques. Elevación: 2880-4000 m. Distribución: Ampliamente distribuido en regiones del Norte templado, y en localidades dispersas del Hemisferio Sur; en el Neotrópico reportada para Centroamérica, Indias Occidentales, sudeste de Brasil, y en los Andes Tropicales sólo conocida de Colombia.

Plants lax, medium-sized to somewhat large, green to pale yellow or brown. Stems irregularly pinnately branched; in cross-section hyalodmeris absent, central strand present; paraphyllia absent; pseudoparaphyllia foliose, broadly rounded to triangular. Leaves erect-patent to subspreading, occasionally gradually curved, broadly lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, to 4 mm or more long, gradually acuminate; margins plane, reflexed or recurved at base sometimes, entire; costa ca. 2/3 leaf length, ca. 50-110 µm wide at base; laminal cells smooth, medium and upper cells linear, not porose; alar region weakly differentiated, extending nearly to costa, cells oblong. Autoicous. Setae elongate. Capsules horizontal, urn cylindrical and curved; peristome well developed. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth and naked. Spores lightly papillose.
Plantas laxas, de tamaño mediano a algo grandes, verdes a amarillo pálidas o pardas. Tallos irregularmente pinnadas; en sección transversal hialodermis ausente, cordón central presente; paráfilos ausentes; pseudoparáfilos foliosos, anchamente redondeados a triangulares. Hojas erecto-patentes a subextendidas, ocasionalmente gradualmente curvadas, anchamente lanceoladas a oblongo-lanceoladas, de hasta 4 mm o más largas, gradualmente acuminadas; márgenes planos, a veces reflexos o recurvados en la base, enteros; costa aprox. 2/3 del largo de la hoja, aprox. 50-110 µm de ancho en la base; células de la lámina lisas, células mediales y superiores lineales, no porosas; región alar levemente diferenciada, extendiéndose casi hasta la costa, células oblongas. Autoicas. Setas alargadas. Cápsulas horizontales, urna cilíndrica y curvada; peristoma bien desarrollado. Caliptra cuculada, lisa y desnuda. Esporas ligeramente papilosas.
