The serrate leaf limb distinguish this species from all other species present in the Andes. The Colombian types by Lindig and Weir are identical in leaf shape and the scabrous-dentate calyptra to the Mexican plants referred to as P. lepidomitrium. Leaves of Glyphomitrium lobuliferum exhibit basal cells that are often straight and thin-walled, but in regard to other features are identical.
