Grimmia longirostris is characterized by the lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, keeled leaves, recurved margins (on one side), 2-3(4) stratose lamina, thick-walled, nodulose juxtacostal cells above base, thick walled upper and lower ends of the marginal cells, erect and straight setae, and immersed to more common exserted, smooth capsules. Grimmia longirostris s by far the most common species collected in the tropical Andes. Previous reports of Grimmia affinis Hornsch. from the Neotropics are referred to G. longirostris. Recent detailed studies by Muñoz have demonstrated that in fact G. affinis is a synonym, as well as more than 30 other taxa (Muñoz 1998, 1999); from the tropical Andes 16 synonyms are recognized for this species. Grimmia herzogii was considered a synonym of G. longirostris by Muñoz; both are similar, the former less robust with ovate to ovate-lanceolate and sinuous setae, the latter relative more robust, with ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate leaves and striaght setae (cf. Delgadillo & Villaseñor 2002).
