general taxon notes:

Grimmia poecilostoma is variable in leaf shape, but characterized by having curved setae shorter than the urns, immersed capsules that are asymmetric and ventricose at base, and well developed peristome.

Rev. Bryol. 28: 118. tab. 5. 1901, nom. con. Grimmia tergestina var. poecilostoma (Card. & Sebille) Loeske, Laubm. Eur. Part I: 84. 1913. Type. France: Isère, Clapier de Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, Sebille (lectotype PC, designated by Muñoz 1999, not seen).
 
Plants medium-sized, usually less than 2 cm high, olive-green to blackish, in compact cusions or loose tufts. Stems erect, with developed central strand in cross section. Leaves erect or appressed when dry, erect-spreading to patent when moist, 1.0–2.0 mm × 0.4–0.6 mm, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, concave, not plicate, narrowly obtuse to acuminate, ending in rather long, hyaline, terete hair-points, up to nearly as long as the laminal length, the hair-points straight, somewhat decurrent, entire or dentate; leaf margins plane; costa percurrent, with undifferentiated ventral and dorsal epidermis, semi-elliptical abaxially in cross section; upper and median leaf cells bistratose, small, subquadrate to rounded-quadrate, 8–12 µm wide, sometimes short-rectangular to oblate, with straight to slightly sinuose walls; basal marginal cells oblate to short-rectangular, 7–25 µm × 10–18 µm, with the transverse walls thicker than the longitudinal walls; basal juxtacostal cells rectangular, 20–40 µm × 10–14 µm, with straight, thin to moderately thick walls. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves convolute, hyaline, filmy, larger than vegetative leaves; perigonia terminal. Setae 0.4–0.6 mm long, curved, shorter than capsule urns; capsules immersed, ovoid, ventricose, smooth, yellowish brown; exothecial cells rectangular, 35–65 µm × 20–35 µm, thin-walled; stomata present at the base of urn; annuli consisting of well developed inflated cells, compound, revoluble; opercula rostrate; peristome teeth orange, broadly lanceolate, 60–115 µm wide at base, irregularly cleft above, finely perforate and papillose on both outer and inner surfaces. Calyptrae mirtrate. Spores 9–12 µm in diameter, smooth.
