Grimmia tergestina is characterized by the concave leaves, plane margins, indistinct costa, distally 2-stratose, quadrate to short rectangular marginal cells at base with thick walled upper and lower ends of the cells, distinctly larger perichaetial leaves, erect and straight setae, immersed, smooth, ovoid capsules.
 
Grimmia tergestina se caracteriza por tener las hojas cóncavas, márgenes planos, costa indistinta, células marginales cuadradas a corto rectangulares en la base con paredes gruesas en los extremos superior e inferior, distalmente 2 estratos, hojas periqueciales conspicuamente mayores, seta erectas y rectas, cápsulas inmersas, lisas, ovoides.
