Ecology: Páramo and humid puna; in marshy or boggy sites, occasionally found submerged, rarely found along streams, humic soil and rocks. Elevation: 3000-5100 m (Venezuela: 3000-4100 m, Colombia: 3425-4260 m, Ecuador: 3800-4300 m, Peru: 3400-5100 m, Bolivia: 3000-4900 m). Distribution: Widespread in the Northern Hemisphere.
Ecología: Subpáramo a páramo; en lugares pantanosos o cenagosos, ocasionalmente sumergido, raramente encontrado a lo largo de corrientes. Elevación: 3000-5100 m (Venezuela: 3000-4100 m, Colombia: 3425-4260 m, Ecuador: 3800-4200 m, Perú: 3400-5100 m, Bolivia: 3000-4680 m). Distribución: Ampliamente distribuido en el Hemisferio Norte.
Fontinalis turfacea Herzog, collected by Herzog from Cordillera de Malaga June 1911, is a synonym. Hypnum bolivianum Schimp. in Müll. Hal. nom. nud. is based on a collection by Mandon made in March 1876 from Motoatacum.
