Plants small, ca. 10 mm or rarely higher, yellowish green, brown below, slightly glossy above, in loose or dense tufts. Stems erect, with papillose rhizoids at base. Leaves dense, appressed when dry, lower leaves ovate-lanceolate, upper leaves elliptical-lanceolate, acuminate, ca. 2.5 mm long; margins recurved throughout, more or less bordered by differentiated, linear cells; costae excurrent, ending in long awns, reddish at base; median leaf cells hexagonal, 35–66 µm × 14–20 µm; basal cells rectangular or oblong-hexagonal. Autoicous. Setae ca. 25–30 mm long, twisted, pale reddish brown; capsules inclined, horizontal to pendulous, club-shaped to ellipsoidal-pyriform, ca. 3.5 mm long, dark brown; neck shorter than urn; opercula conic, rostrate; exostome teeth orange below, pellucid and strongly papillose above; endostome segments widely perforate; basal membrane ca. 1/2 the height of teeth; cilia 2–3, slightly shorter than the segments, nodose or appendiculate. Spores 15–20 µm in diameter.
